Family & Graduate Housing

NOTE:

  • FGH applications for for the upcoming 2026-2027 FGH term (September 1, 2026 - July 31, 2027) will open in April 2026. Students must be actively registered in courses / programs for the 2026-2027 academic year to be eligible. 

  • PLEASE NOTE that FGH apartments for the current 2025-2026 FGH term are currently FULL.

  • Priority for any available apartments will be given to student families, mature students, and graduate students.

Saint Mary's University offers one- and two-bedroom apartments for student families, graduate students, and mature students. Family & Graduate Housing (FGH) apartments are located in the Loyola Residence building.

Monthly rent includes:

  • Electricity
  • Heat
  • Water and hot water
  • Range and refrigerator
  • Access to the campus network
  • Wireless internet

Televisions, computers, and necessary cords are not included.

Card-operated laundry facilities are located on the second floor of the Loyola Residence building. Janitorial service is provided for common areas throughout the building (i.e. elevator lobby, hallways), but FGH residents are responsible for cleaning their apartments themselves. Please refer to the Residence Handbook for more information.

Individuals who meet one or more of the following criteria below are eligible to apply for Family & Graduate Housing at Saint Mary's University:

  • Married and common law couples, with or without children, with one or both of the spouses being a student at Saint Mary's University. Preference is given to those in full-time attendance; however, part-time students will be considered.

  • Single parent students who are attending the University and whose children will be living with them at the University. 

  • Students enrolled in graduate degree programs at the University. 

  • Single students who have a disability, which makes the more traditional style of residence unsuitable for their needs. (All attempts will be made initially to house these students in Single Student Housing.)

The Director, Housing & Conference Services is responsible for decisions regarding eligibility for these accommodations.

These apartments include one bedroom, a kitchen, a living/dining room, a bathroom, a hallway, a storage area (in some cases), and closets. Most one bedrooms face west, overlooking Halifax's North West Arm of the harbour. A few face east, overlooking Huskies Stadium and the Halifax Harbour.

How Long Are FGH Residence Agreements?
FGH residence agreements are 11 months in length. All agreements end on July 31 of each year. Residents continuing their studies will have the opportunity to renew their agreement for additional 12 months.

When Can I Renew My Agreement?
Housing staff we will reach out to current residents regarding the renewal process. The renewal process generally begins in February - March each year.

Rates, Payment, and Availability: 

  • Monthly rent is deducted from a bank account of the resident's choice on the first day of each month via a Pre-Approved Debit (PAD) system.
  • FGH monthly rental are adjusted annually on August 1 of each year.

Are Meal Plans Required?
No. Meal plans are optional for residents living in Family & Graduate Housing apartments. If interested in a meal plan please contact SMU Dining.

Insurance:
You are responsible for arranging adequate insurance coverage for all of your belongings. The University's insurance policy does not cover damage to or loss of your personal property. You should also determine if additional insurance is required for more expensive items such as a camera, TV, stereo, computer or jewelry etc. The University will not assume responsibility for loss or damage to any possessions, however caused. You are responsible for reporting stolen personal items to the Halifax Regional Police.

Decorating and Caring for your Apartment:
No
part of the residence premises may be painted, wall-papered, or permanently decorated without the written consent of the Department of Housing & Conference Services.

Residents may rearrange university-provided furniture within their assigned apartment; however, all furniture must be returned to its original placement prior to check out.

Using nails, tacks, hooks, spikes, tape or other items to hang pictures, posters and other material on the walls in your room will result in damage and is not permitted. In instances where the aforementioned items are applied to painted surfaces within a room or apartment, an assessment will result for each item found to be used. Failure to remove these items will result in additional fines. This assessment is over and above any damage to the room caused by the use of the prohibited item.

The following 3 adhesives have been approved by the University:

  • Magic-Mounts. Available at the SMU Campus Bookstore.
  • 3M 'Command' Adhesive products. 3M products can be purchased at bookstores, hardware and department stores.
  • Poster Putty. Available in most supply stores.

Note: This is not an endorsement by the University as to the efficacy of any of these products and students are encouraged to read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Residence opens on September 1 @ 9:00am. Once residence is open, residents can check in at the Loyola Front Desk which is open 24 hours / day.
We are NOT able to accommodate any early arrivals prior to September 1.

If you do not arrive and check-in by 5:00 PM on the first day of classes, your residence reservation will be cancelled. If you know that you will be arriving late you must contact the Housing & Residence Office and provide written notification that you will be arriving late for residence.

PLEASE NOTE: The best address to use for wayfinding to the Loyola Residence Desk for those who are driving, walking, or arriving by taxi is: 5907 Gorsebrook Avenue, Halifax, NS, B3H 1G3.

When you move out of residence you must follow the move out procedures listed below.
NOTE: If you are looking to move out of residence prior to the end of your agreement, please contact Housing & Residence (residence.housing@smu.ca) per our withdrawal policy. 

  • All personal belongings and garbage must be removed from your apartment and you must thoroughly clean your apartment.
  • All floor surfaces must be swept clean and washed.
  • All wall surfaces must be washed (kitchen, hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms)
  • The bathroom sink, tub, tiles, and toilet must be scrubbed.
  • The refrigerator must be emptied and wiped out. The freezer must be defrosted and cleaned.
  • The oven, stove-top and burners must be thoroughly cleaned.
  • While residents may rearrange university-provided furniture within their assigned room, all furniture must be returned to its original placement prior to check out.
  • You must check out at the Loyola Residence Desk insuring all issued keys are returned to the Loyola Residence Desk. Any key sets not returned at the time of check out will result in additional charges. 
  • In cases where students fail to follow the move out procedures, cleaning will be done by University custodians / contract cleaners and the student will be billed an appropriate amount for labour and materials.
