External Awards

While Saint Mary's has a large number of awards for new and returning students, all students should be aware of other sources of financial aid. Here are some good places to start:

• Africville Heritage Trust Society Scholarship Awards Program - deadline to apply: June 30, 2025
  The fund will provide up to 5 individual scholarships totaling $5,000 annually. To be eligible, the applicant must be (1) a Canadian Citizen and (2) a former Africville resident or a descendant of a former Africville resident. Consideration may also be given from applicants who do not meet this 2nd requirement but have, through their educational pursuits, demonstrated an effort to further the purpose of the Africville Heritage Trust (to keep alive the memory and spirit of the community of Africville through interpretation, education and dialogue), through community advocacy initiatives, research, publications, and training.
  
  
• Canadian Services Division, Nova Scotia Department of Education 
  Scholarship program for African Nova Scotian Students.
  Post-Secondary Award (for 2nd, 3rd, 4th year university students) - Application deadline: July 25, 2025
  
  
• The PREP Academy
  Scholarship database for African Nova Scotian Students.
  
  
• Halifax Community Investment Fund
  A bursary program for new students whose permanent residence is on the streets or in the area of Halifax bounded by Cogswell, North Park/Agricola, North and Barrington Streets.
  
  
• BBPA National Scholarship Program
  The Black Business and Professional Association is designed to support Black Canadian students pursuing post-secondary education. This annual scholarship program is open to Black Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program at a Canadian college or university.

• Autism Nova Scotia and The Craig Foundation
  Amy Farnell Education Award(s) are available to eligible Nova Scotian students who identify as autistic/on the autism spectrum, and who have been accepted into a full-time post-secondary program. Each individual award is valued at up to $2,000 a year and is renewable for the regular duration of the chosen program, to a maximum of four years. To renew, the student must be in good academic standing and remain enrolled full-time.

• Lebanese Chamber of Commerce in Nova Scotia  
  Scholarship program for college or university students studying within Nova Scotia and of Lebanese descent.

• Yconic
  Database of scholarships, bursaries, fellowships, grants and other financial awards available to Canadian students.
  
  
• Loretta Saunders Community Scholarship Fund - deadline to apply: July 30
  The Scholarship Fund aims to support Indigenous women in their chosen field of study who are attending a post-secondary institution in Mi’kma’ki, Nunatsiavut, or Atlantic Canada and who have completed the equivalent of one year of post-secondary education in the previous two years. 
  
  
• Indigenous Treaty Partners Scholarship fund
  Scholarship programs available for Indigenous students. 
  
  
• McCall MacBain Scholarships
  Leadership-driven scholarships for master’s and professional degree students. Current students and recent graduates of Canadian public universities must earn the endorsement of their institution.
