Doctor of Laws
Senator Moore will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. He received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Saint Mary's University in 1964, so this will be the second time he will cross the stage and receive a degree from Saint Mary?s. He also holds a Law degree from Dalhousie University (1968). He was appointed to the Senate by The Rt. Honourable Jean Chr?tien as a representative of the Province of Nova Scotia on September 26, 1996.
He is currently a Member of the following Senate Committees: Banking, Trade and commerce; Scrutiny of Regulations; and, National Security and Defence. He is also chair of the Art Advisory Working Group of the Senate. Areas of interest include post-secondary education and regional economic development. Favourite pastimes include sailing, skiing, art, and reading. A lawyer and Queen?s Counsel (1983), Senator Moore?s career also includes extensive experience in the Halifax community. From 1974 to 1980, he was a Halifax Alderman, and he served as Deputy Mayor of the City from 1977 to 1978. His career also includes serving as Chairman of the Social Assistance Appeal Board for Halifax and Dartmouth; as a founding Director and Chairman of the Halifax Metro Centre, and he served 10 years as a Member of the Board of Governors of Saint Mary's University. He is a former Member of the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve. He has served as Chairman of the Bluenose II Preservation Trust, a group of volunteers who restored, maintained and operated the historic schooner Bluenose II for 10 years from 1994.
Among his achievements in the Senate, he initiated an inquiry into the role of the federal government in the accumulated deferred maintenance costs of our universities. That work led to a federal budget line item that provides funding assistance for our universities to meet such maintenance costs. Senator Moore was one of the authors of a paper entitled ?Catching Tomorrow?s Wave? which led to a federal funding package that highlighted research and development in the Atlantic Provinces centered in our universities.
