Sister Dorothy Moore, C.S.M.
Doctor of Civil Law
Sister Dorothy has bachelor’s degrees in arts and education from St. Francis Xavier University and a master’s degree in education from Mount Saint Vincent University. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Cape Breton, and for 22 years (except three in Alberta) she taught at various schools across Nova Scotia. In 1980, she became the Principal of the Eskasoni elementary and Junior High School.
From 1985 to 1995, she served on the faculty at the University college of Cape Breton (UCCCB) as Native Education Coordinator; Native Studies counselor; advisor and lecturer. After her work at UCCB, Sister Dorothy became Director of Mi’kmaq Services for the Nova Scotia Department of Education. Today, she is a consultant and mentor to the teaching staff of the elementary school in Membertou.
She has also served on numerous boards in Nova Scotia. She was a member of the Canadian Bible Society Board; the Institute for Early childhood Education and Development Services; the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission; and the Federal Council on Reconciliation for the Canadian Conference of Catholic bishops.
As an educator, Sister Dorothy has made numerous presentations concerning racism, First Nations’ education, and Native Spirituality throughout Atlantic Canada. She has been widely recognized for her contributions. In 2005 she was named to the Order of Canada, and in 2003 was the recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia
The honorary degree from Saint Mary’s recognizes Sister Dorothy’s devotion and achievements in education, her service to community, and her ongoing efforts to defend and promote the rights of First Nations’ people.
