Overview:
Howard was born in Geogia, grew up eastern US, and became a Maritimerby choice. He attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA and graduated with a BA in Geology and an MSc in Geology. Howard continued his educational career at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) under the supervision of Richard L. Brown and later, Nicholas Rast. He earned his PhD in Structural Geology in 1978.
Effective teaching and helping students learn how to learn has always been important for Howard. He has taught geology courses at Lehigh, Rutgers University in Camden, NJ, UNB in Fredericton and Saint John, and Saint Mary’s University.
Howard worked for the Government of Nova Scotia in the Department of Natural Resources first as a project manager mapping the Cobequid Mountains and later the Louisburg Region of Cape Breton. He managed a Public Outreach Program in Geoscience for the Department with funding from the Canada-Nova Scotia Mineral Development Agreement. Before retiring, Howard was clarifying mineral policy issues under the Mineral Resource Act.
He began teaching career at Saint Mary’s University in the mid-1990s as a part-time instructor. Since that time, he has taught Global Change; Environmental Geology; Radiation, Environment, and Society; Mineralogy; Optical Mineralogy; and some of the labs for Understanding the Earth.
Howard was awarded the E.R.W. Neale Award of the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) for excellence in public outreach in the geosciences. At Saint Mary’s University, he received the Dr. Geraldine Thomas Educational Leadership Award for his work in teaching and learning. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the GAC, Geoscience Canada Fellow, Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Fellow, and an Honourary Fellow of Engineers Canada. He is a former president of the Atlantic Geoscience Society and the Mining Society of Nova Scotia.
Research Interests:
Howard’s research interests are focused on the structural history of deformed belts, the history of fault movements, volcanic eruptions and strata, and deformational events such as the Acadian Orogeny. He makes these details and events assessable to various publics through his abilities in public outreach in the geosciences.
Published Work:
Published work by Howard helps interested laypersons and geoscientists learn more about the geological history of Nova Scotia. He has con-authored three editions of the Geological Highway Map of Nova Scotia and many brochures such as Nova Scotia Minerals and Gems. He has helped develop videos for the former Department of Natural Resources (Real Tin and Salt of the Earth) and the Atlantic Geoscience Society (Mineral Wealth of Atlantic Canada, The Appalachian Story, and Oil and Gas).
